What is a Tesla Powerwall 2?

Tesla Powerwall 2 is a fully integrated, rechargeable solar battery system suitable for residential or light commercial use.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 system stores energy from solar or  the grid and makes it available on demand, providing energy storage for self-consumption, load shifting, off-grid use or backup power. 

App-controlled features make it possible to monitor and dictate your power storage and usage to suit your needs. 

These units are compact (1150mm x 753mm x 147mm), attractive and easy to integrate into existing energy systems. The electrical interface makes for simple connection to any home or building.

Up to ten Tesla Powerwall 2 units can be incorporated into a system. Each Tesla Powerwall 2 has a capacity of 13.5kWh of battery storage.

There are many options for mounting, including:

Limitations do apply in some instances, depending on the environment and the amount of Powerwalls to be installed.

Your existing electrical system

The Tesla Powerwall 2 can be installed and integrated into:

Using stored power generated from the grid or from solar (or both), your Powerwall can run your home independent of the grid. Powerwall must always be connected to the grid (even though it can run independently of the grid).

Here’s exactly what we will be installing and what to expect for your installation process.

What does a ‘Powerwall system’ include?

  • A Powerwall battery (or batteries)
  • A Backup Gateway
  • Standard electrical hardware. 

‘Standard hardware’ will vary and is specific to each installation. It ensures compliance with electrical codes and can include circuit breaker panels, junction boxes and conduit. Where possible, electrical hardware can be hidden in walls.

The backup gateway controls the operation of the system, allows remote monitoring of energy usage and controls connection with the grid, automatically managing the transition to and from backup operation. 

Preferred installation location

You have the opportunity to submit a preferred location for your Tesla Powerwall 2 installation, which will be taken into account by the technicians designing your system.

There are environmental considerations and specifications for Tesla Powerwall 2 that are important to keep in mind if submitting a preferred location. 

  • Installation can be indoors or outdoors. 
  • Powerwall is water, dust and humidity resistant.
  • Powerwall’s operating temperature range is -20°C to 50°C.

Installation should be avoided where there is:

  • exposure to direct sunlight, or sustained high or low temperatures
  • flooding, snow, or proximity to water sources (downpipes, taps, sprinklers) 
  • heavy leaves, debris or dense bush (that block ventilation). 

Installation day

A typical residential installation takes up to a full day and the power will be turned off for a minimum of four hours during this time. 

Powerwall installation for larger systems where complex electrical work is required, or where a full solar system or additional solar batteries are being installed, may take longer than a full day.

It is helpful if you clear the installation area and key access points prior to our arrival on the day. We may have more than one electrician working at your property. You may need to be home for access reasons and may be asked to be available through the day. 

After installation, Powerwall is operational and you can enjoy your Tesla Powerwall 2 backup power!

Caring for your Powerwall

Tesla Powerwall 2 does not require pre-scheduled preventative maintenance, however there are some care tips you should know for protecting and preserving your new Powerwall system.  

  • Keep the sides clear of debris to maintain airflow. 
  • Don’t lean on it, stack or hang anything on it. 
  • Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth. 
  • Avoid cleaning solvents and exposure to harsh chemicals.
  • Ensure all covers are in place during operation.

Who can install Tesla Powerwall?

Tesla Powerwall 2 is a hard-wired, electrical appliance. Legally in Australia, all hard-wired electrical appliances must be installed by a licensed electrician. 

To maintain your warranty and for your own safety, ensure that your Tesla Powerwall 2 is installed by a registered and licensed electrical contractor who is also a Tesla Powerwall Certified Installer.

This means that all electrical work is undertaken in compliance with Australian Electrical Safety Standards and the Electrical Safety Act 1998.

Difference between Tesla Powerwall 1 and 2

Tesla Powerwall 2 is the second generation of Tesla Powerwall. It is still commonly referred to as Tesla Powerwall or just Powerwall. Tesla Powerwall 2 is Tesla’s newest solar battery. Tesla Powerwall 2 has double the amount of battery storage (13.5kWh), in a smaller unit.

Does Tesla Powerwall have to be installed outside?

Tesla Powerwall 2 can be installed indoors or outdoors. We have included some environmental considerations for selecting your preferred location.

How long does a Tesla Powerwall 2 last?

Tesla Powerwall is backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty. It’s important to note that the warranty term depends on the system being reliably connected to internet (wifi) to allow remote firmware upgrades from Tesla. If connection is not established or interrupted for an extended period, warranty may be limited to 4 years.

Can my Powerwall come with me when I move house?

Yes! However, moving your Powerwall and Gateway will incur a removal and installation fee. Solstra can complete your relocation as your certified installer.
