Hospital Solar

Hospital Solar Project Summary

St John of God Accord (an entity of St John of God Health Care) specialises in delivering support services to improve the lives of people with an intellectual disability, working directly with clients, their families and carers. Their head office is located in Saint Helena, Melbourne (also referred to as their Greensborough site). The site is currently used for corporate administration, consulting rooms and delivery of select services including Programs of Support, School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) and the Accord Plus after hours program.

Following development and Board endorsement of its Environmental Sustainability Roadmap, St John of God Accord developed and submitted a business case for the rollout of solar PV systems at strategic hospitals within its group, which obtained Government funding for a PV system at the St John of God Accord Greensborough site. The client commenced a project seeking a commercial solar installation to reduce their carbon footprint and provide energy storage for the clinic.

St John of God Accord approached Solstra requesting a quotation for a solar system of the maximum allowed size and capacity possible on their roof space, using Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). STC’s also allowed them to access the Federal Government solar rebate through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme

What we delivered: Hospital Solar

Solstra custom-designed and installed a high-performing 99.55kW commercial solar system at the St John of God Accord Greensborough site. The system included:

  • 181 x 550W solar panels
  • 3 x multi-MPPT string inverters
  • 10000W 3-phase hybrid inverter
  • 12.8kW high voltage LFP solar battery
  • 2 x electric vehicle charging stations

Based on our client’s electricity bills, energy usage patterns and the site itself, we were able to determine the best solar system design and configuration for their power needs and budget, utilising available funding and rebates. We were able to satisfy the client requirements and more, with an additional incorporated EV charging station for charging their electric vehicles onsite with solar.

  • The largest system possible for their roof space
  • Eligible for the STC (Federal Solar) rebate
  • Incorporated solar battery for energy storage
  • Incorporated electric vehicle charging station

We work in collaboration with key providers and authorities to facilitate parts of the commercial pre-approval process (compliance with commercial solar regulations), the grid-connection process (grid power provider) and final electrical inspections/testing (compliance sign-offs).

Hospital solar project benefits

Installing hospital solar provides significant environmental benefits for our client. Here’s an environmental analysis of the system we delivered for our client:

  • Annual production (AC) : 141.123 MWh
  • Average monthly bill estimated drop by 58%
  • Trees planted equivalent: 2551 trees per year
  • Avoided equivalent fuel: 42379 litres of petrol a year
  • Avoided coal burnt: 48163 kg of coal per year

St John of God Accord said that they initially chose Solstra for hospital solar installation because of our comprehensive quote and easily contactable sales and support team. They were very happy with the hospital solar system we custom-designed and installed, that all their needs were met (and more) and with Solstras consistent and friendly communication along the way. Solstra is now servicing clients who work onsite, with their own personal solar systems!

Kevin and his team were fantastic to deal with. They were professional and clearly had a lot of experience in the solar area. From my first engagement until post installation was seamless including multiple follow up calls to check all was in order. They worked with our builder and were flexible on installation based on our build. We are already reaping the benefits of the solar.
